An extended-release injectable formulation of the second-generation antipsychotic aripiprazole (Abilify) has been approved by the FDA (Abilify Maintena – Otsuka/Lundbeck) for once-monthly treatment of schizophrenia. It is the fourth second-generation antipsychotic to become available in a long-acting parenteral formulation. Long-acting parenteral antipsychotics, given at intervals of 2-4 weeks, are generally used for patients with a history of relapse due to poor adherence to oral maintenance therapy.

The FDA has approved elvitegravir (Vitekta – Gilead), an integrase strand transfer inhibitor (INSTI), for use with a protease inhibitor (PI) plus ritonavir and other antiretroviral drugs for treatment of HIV-1 infection in treatment-experienced adults. The FDA has approved Duzallo (Ironwood), a fixed-dose combination of the uric acid transporter 1 (URAT1) inhibitor lesinurad (Zurampic) and the xanthine oxidase inhibitor allopurinol (Zyloprim, and generics), for once-daily treatment of gout-associated hyperuricemia in patients who have not achieved target serum uric acid levels with allopurinol alone.

The FDA has approved Juluca (ViiV Healthcare/Janssen), a fixed-dose combination of the integrase strand transfer inhibitor (INSTI) dolutegravir (Tivicay) and the non-nucleoside reverse transcriptase inhibitor (NNRTI) rilpivirine (Edurant), as a once-daily complete regimen for treatment of adults with HIV-1 infection who do not have a history of treatment failure or known substitutions associated with resistance to either drug and have been taking a stable suppressive antiretroviral regimen for ≥6 months. Annovera (TherapeuticsMD), a contraceptive vaginal ring that releases segesterone acetate, a synthetic progestin, and ethinyl estradiol, was approved by the FDA in 2018 and is now available. It is the first product to contain segesterone and the second vaginal ring to become available in the US; NuvaRing, which delivers etonogestrel and ethinyl estradiol, was the first. Unlike NuvaRing, which requires use of a new ring each month, the Annovera ring can be used for an entire year, but it must be removed for one week each month.

The FDA has approved oral and injectable formulations of the HIV-1 capsid inhibitor lenacapavir (Sunlenca – Gilead) for use with other antiretroviral drugs to treat multidrug-resistant HIV-1 infection (MDR-HIV) in heavily treatment-experienced adults whose current regimen is failing.
