Linezolid, the first of a new class of antibiotics, the oxazolidinones, has been marketed for treatment of infection due to vancomycin-resistant Enterococcus faecium, nosocomial and community-acquired pueumonia due to Staphylococcus aureus or penicillin-sucsceptible Streptococcus pneumoniae, and skin and skin structure infections, including those due to methicillin-resistant S. aureus (MRSA).

The FDA has issued new warnings about the use of the opioid analgesics codeine and tramadol in children, particularly those <12 years old, and in breastfeeding women due to concerns about the risk of respiratory depression and death. The FDA previously issued warnings about these drugs in 2013 and 2015.

The Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) has reclassified all hydrocodone combination products as schedule II controlled substances; they were previously classified as schedule III. Hydrocodone alone (Zohydro ER) is already a schedule II controlled substance.

The FDA has approved over-the-counter (OTC) sale of inhaled epinephrine (Primatene Mist – Amphastar), a nonselective alpha and beta agonist, for temporary relief of mild symptoms of intermittent asthma in patients ≥12 years old who have been diagnosed with mild intermittent asthma by a healthcare professional. The original version of Primatene Mist, which was approved by the FDA in 1967, was removed from the market in 2011 because the metered-dose inhaler (MDI) contained ozone-depleting chlorofluorocarbon (CFC) propellants; the new MDI contains hydrofluoroalkane (HFA)...

Many drugs can cause psychiatric symptoms, but a causal connection is often difficult to establish. Psychiatric symptoms that emerge during drug treatment could also be due to the underlying illness, previously unrecognized psychopathology, or psychosocial factors. The withdrawal of some drugs can cause symptoms such as anxiety, psychosis, delirium, agitation or depression.

Testing for drug use has become increasingly common, not only in health care, but also in drug rehabilitation, in the military, at the workplace, after accidents and in the criminal justice system. Performance-enhancing drugs such as anabolic steroids, growth hormone (Genotropin, and others) and erythropoietin (Procrit, Epogen) are not discussed here.

Montelukast (Singulair - Merck) is an oral cysteinyl leukotriene D₄ receptor antagonist originally marketed for treatment of asthma. It was approved by the FDA in 2003 for treatment of seasonal allergic rhinitis and recently for use in perennial allergic rhinitis in adults and children ≥ 6 months old. Intranasal corticosteroids have generally been considered the most effective drugs available for prevention and treatment of allergic rhinitis.

The FDA has approved the monoamine oxidase type B (MAO-B) inhibitor safinamide (Xadago – US Worldmeds) as an adjunct to levodopa/carbidopa for management of "off" episodes in patients with Parkinson’s disease (PD). It is the first reversible MAO-B inhibitor to be approved for this indication. Selegiline (Eldepryl, and others) and rasagiline (Azilect, and generics), two irreversible MAO-B inhibitors, have been used alone and as adjuncts to levodopa/carbidopa for many years. Safinamide is not approved for use as monotherapy.

The FDA recently approved the monoamine oxidase inhibitor (MAOI) selegiline in a transdermal (patch) formulation (Emsam - Bristol-Myers Squibb/Somerset) for treatment of major depressive disorder. Selegiline is also available in an oral formulation (Eldepryl, and others) for treatment of Parkinson's disease.

The FDA has approved two new drugs for treatment of adults with acute bacterial skin and skin structure infections caused by susceptible gram-positive bacteria. Dalbavancin (Dalvance – Durata) is a long-acting intravenous (IV) lipoglycopeptide antibiotic similar to telavancin (Vibativ).
