Many drugs can cause psychiatric symptoms, but a causal connection is often difficult to establish. Psychiatric symptoms that emerge during drug treatment could also be due to the underlying illness, previously unrecognized psychopathology, or psychosocial factors. The withdrawal of some drugs can cause symptoms such as anxiety, psychosis, delirium, agitation or depression.

The FDA has approved the marketing of extended release (ER) ranolazine (Ranexa - CV Therapeutics) for treatment of chronic angina in patients who have not achieved an adequate response with other antianginal drugs. It should be used in combination with a nitrate, a beta-blocker or the dihydropyridine calcium-channel blocker amlodipine (Norvasc), and appears to be more effective in men. The labeling for ranolazine specifies amlodipine as the calcium-channel blocker of choice because the use of other dihydropyridines with ranolazine has not been studied, and use with diltiazem (Cardizem, and...

An extended-release injectable formulation of the second-generation antipsychotic aripiprazole (Abilify) has been approved by the FDA (Abilify Maintena – Otsuka/Lundbeck) for once-monthly treatment of schizophrenia. It is the fourth second-generation antipsychotic to become available in a long-acting parenteral formulation. Long-acting parenteral antipsychotics, given at intervals of 2-4 weeks, are generally used for patients with a history of relapse due to poor adherence to oral maintenance therapy.

The FDA has warned that use of the macrolide antibiotic clarithromycin (Biaxin, and generics) may increase the risk of cardiovascular morbidity and mortality in patients with heart disease.

Voriconazole (Vfend -- Pfizer), an antifungal triazole structurally related to fluconazole (Diflucan) with a spectrum of action similar to that of itraconazole, has been approved by the FDA for primary treatment of invasive aspergillosis and for refractory infection with Scedosporium apiospermum (the asexual form of Pseudallescheria boydii) or Fusarium spp.

Duloxetine hydrochloride (Cymbalta - Lilly), a selective serotonin and norepinephrine reuptake inhibitor (SNRI), has been approved by the FDA for treatment of major depressive disorder in adults, and more recently for diabetic peripheral neuropathy as well. The FDA has approved edoxaban (Savaysa – Daiichi Sankyo), a once-daily, oral, direct factor Xa inhibitor, for treatment of venous thromoboembolism (VTE) and for prevention of stroke and systemic embolism in patients with nonvalvular atrial fibrillation. It is the fourth new oral anticoagulant to be approved for VTE and nonvalvular atrial fibrillation.

The FDA has approved gepotidacin (Blujepa – GSK), a triazaacenaphthylene bacterial type II topoisomerase inhibitor, for oral treatment of uncomplicated urinary tract infections (uUTI) in female patients ≥12 years old who weigh ≥40 kg. Gepotidacin is the first triazaacenaphthylene antibiotic to be approved in the US.

The FDA has approved two antibiotics, gepotidacin (Blujepa — GSK) and zoliflodacin (Nuzolvence — Entasis), for oral treatment of uncomplicated urogenital gonorrhea in patients ≥12 years old. Gepotidacin is approved for use in persons weighing ≥45 kg who have limited or no alternative treatment options; it was approved in 2025 for treatment of uncomplicated urinary tract infection in females. Zoliflodacin is approved for use in persons weighing ≥35 kg. Neither drug is indicated for treatment of rectal or pharyngeal gonorrhea.
